<p>The Royal Neighbors of America National Home, also known as Grandview Terrace, is a historic district located on a bluff overlooking the Mississippi River in the west end of Davenport, Iowa, United States. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2015.</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>Founded in 1895, Royal Neighbors of America was the first fraternal benefit society that provided life insurance protection for women. It is based across the river from Davenport in Rock Island, Illinois. In 1929 Royal Neighbors passed a resolution to establish a facility that would provide a home for mothers and other women in their organization who were in need of assistance. They bought 40 acre of land along Rockingham Road in Davenport&#39;s west end in February 1930.</p><br>
<p>The Davenport architectural firm of Clausen, Kruse & Klein designed the facility in the Georgian Revival style. The building features a columned porch that extends across the front of the building and a living room with floor-to-ceiling windows and a fireplace. Five hundred people gathered for its dedication on July 18, 1931, as the Royal Neighbors National Home. It had space for 52 residents. Over the years the property grew to encompass 77 acre.</p><br>
<p>In order to live there, the residents had to turn over their assets to the society and they were allowed to live at the home until they died. They also had to be of "good moral character, free from contagious or infectious disease, unable by reason of age to provide for the necessities of life…" The home&#39;s name was changed to Grandview Terrace in 1993. The facility increasingly faced an operations deficit, and regulatory demands to update the building were also mounting. In order to control costs, the policy by which members turned their assets over to the society to live at Grandview Terrace was changed in 1996 so that members could pay rent instead.</p><br>
<p>The Royal Neighbors membership decided that providing senior housing was not part of its core mission and they closed the home on October 1, 2004. The contents of the home were sold at auction. As of 2015 the buildings are vacant and in a dilapidated condition.</p><br>
<p>The Bastide du Jas de Bouffan  is a historic bastide in Aix-en-Provence, France.</p><br>
<h2>Location</h2><br>
<p>The bastide is located at 17 route de Galice in Jas de Bouffan, a neighbourhood of Aix-en-Provence.</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>The bastide was built circa 1750 for Gaspard Truphème, an Advisor to the Court of Audits. He hired architect Georges Vallon, who designed many other historic buildings in the centre of Aix. The bastide is surrounded by a private garden with ponds, fountains and sculptures. It was inherited by Gaspard&#39;s son, Pierre, followed by his grandson, Joseph, whose daughter Gabrielle passed it to her son, Gabriel Joursin in 1854.</p><br>
<p>The bastide was purchased by banker Louis-Auguste Cézanne, the father of famed painter Paul Cézanne, in 1859. In 1880, Paul Cézanne established an atelier in the attic. He also painted the walls of the living-room. Additionally, he often painted in the garden, looking out to the Montagne Sainte-Victoire from different vantage points. After his father&#39;s death, he lived in the bastide with his mother.</p><br>
<p>The bastide was acquired by Louis Granel, an engineer, in 1899. His daughter married Frédéric Corsy, an anatomist. His son, André Corsy, lived their with his wife, Nina Wakhévitch, and their adopted children until his death in 2002.</p><br>
<p>The house now belongs to the city of Aix-en-Provence. Since 2006, it may be visited by tourists, by appointment only.</p><br>
<h2>Architectural significance</h2><br>
<p>It has been listed as an official historical monument by the French Ministry of Culture since 2001.</p><br>
<p>Lake Eva, located west of Polk County Road 557, is on the north side of the city of Lake Alfred, Florida. This lake is somewhat kidney-shaped and has a surface area of 20.5 acre. Lake Eva in inside the Lake Alfred city limits and is 380 ft west of Polk County Road 557. Its east shore is bordered by some homes with large lots. The northeast, north and west shores are bordered by citrus groves. A swampy area is on the south shore and a grassy area is along the southeast shore.</p><br>
<p>Lake Eva is completely surrounded by private property. There is no public access to Lake Eva other than a canal on the lake&#39;s southwest that connects to nearby Lake Alfred. However, this canal is too shallow to be navigated by any boats and it is sometimes dry. There is no information about the types of fish in the lake, although it appears in an area map in the Take Me Fishing website.</p><br>
<p>The Francisco Q. Sanchez Elementary School is a historic school building on the north sode of Guam Highway 2 in Umatac, Guam. It is a single-story International style structure, with two classroom wings flanking a central administration area. The building was designed by noted Internationalist architect Richard J. Neutra, and built in 1953 adjacent to the San Dionisio Church Ruins. Neutras design sought to integrate the school with its surrounding environment, and provides a panoramic view of Umatac Bay. The building is one of four buildings built pursuant to a master plan  developed by Neutra and Robert J. Alexander. It is Umatac&#39;s only school.</p><br>
<p>The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1998.</p><br>
<p>The Sebasticook Lake Fishweir Complex is a series of prehistoric fishing weir structures submerged in the waters of Sebasticook Lake in Newport, Maine. With radiocarbon dates as far back as 3000 BCE, it is one of the oldest structures of its type in North America, and the only one in eastern North America that has been directly dated. Its existence provides evidence of large-scale organization among Native Americans of the period in northeastern North America necessary to create structures of its complexity. The complex was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1994.</p><br>
<h2>Sebasticook Lake</h2><br>
<p>Sebasticook Lake is entirely within the town of Newport on the East Branch Sebasticook River 8 mi upstream of the East Branch confluence with the Sebasticook River. It is the largest lake in the Sebasticook River watershed tributary of the Kennebec River. Stetson Stream flows 4 mi into the east end of the lake from Pleasant Lake in Stetson. The East Branch Sebasticook River flows 12 mi into the north end of the lake from Lake Wassookeag in Dexter. Smaller tributaries to the north end of the lake include Ring Brook and Harrison White Brook. The Dexter and Newport Railroad ran along the western shore of the lake and followed the East Branch Sebasticook River upstream through the towns of Corinna and Dexter. Nutrient-rich runoff from these communities caused eutrophication of the lake, with increased accumulation of bottom sediments from the annual die-off of aquatic vegetation. Fish species formerly present in the lake have been replaced by largemouth bass and crappie stocked by the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife.</p><br>
<h2>Description</h2><br>
<p>The weir complex is located near the outlet of one of Sebasticook Lakes tributaries. Sebasticook Lake is a large body of water whose mouth has been dammed for some time; in the 1980s work was done to lower the mouth, and normal lowerings of the lakes water level after this change exposed the weirs to view. The weirs consist of a series of structures extending along what researching archaeologists believe to be historic positions of the tributary&#39;s main channel. The structures consist of wooden stakes, sharpened at the lower end by a stone axe, that were embedded in silt and organic material. The tops of the stakes, normally exposed to water when the lake is at a high level, and now exposed to air at lower levels, have been lost to natural processes and breakage by passing watercraft. These structures are subject to rapid erosion when the lake is at low water levels.</p><br>
<p>A second element of the weir structures are pedestals of organic material which are topped by stones. These structures were particularly sensitive to the raising and lowering of the lake&#39;s water level; several of them collapsed during the three-year period (1991–93) when the weir complex was examined.</p><br>
<p>In addition to the features of the weirs themselves, stone and wooden artifacts were found in the area. One interesting item found was a fragment of a birch bark container, radiocarbon dated to c. 200 BCE. Stone tools and projectile points have also been found by divers in the lake just beyond the modern mouth of the tributary.</p><br>
<p>Bric Gettina is a 1025 metres high mountain in the Ligurian Prealps  in Italy.</p><br>
<h2>Geography</h2><br>
<p>The mountain is located in the province of Savona, in Liguria. In the SOIUSA (International Standardized Mountain Subdivision of the Alps) it gives the name to the Costiera del Bric Gettina,</p><br>
<p>a long ridge which, starting from the main chain of the Alps at monte Settepani, heads south-east towards the Ligurian Sea, dividing the valleys Pora and Maremola.</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>On the slopes of Bric Gettina looking towards Pora Valley during the Renaissance period some silver mines have been exploited. On the site are now visible some tunnels and the remains of buildings devoted to first processing of the mineral and sheltering of miners.</p><br>
<h2>Access to the summit</h2><br>
<p>The summit of Bric Gettina can be accessed following unmarked traks departing from the foothpath connecting Casa del Mago and the former silver mines.</p><br>
<p>Lake Kapowsin is a lake in Pierce County, Washington, about halfway between Tacoma on Puget Sound, and Mount Rainier in the Cascade Mountains. The lake is 2.5 mi long and 0.15 - wide, lying in a channel formed by meltwater from the Puget lobe of the Vashon glacier during the Pleistocene glaciation. A small unnamed island lies in the northern half of the lake. As indicated by a drowned forest in the lake and other evidence, the Puyallup River was inundated about 550 years ago by a lahar from Mount Rainier called the Electron Mudflow. The mudflow partially filled the channel  and blocked Ohop Creek&#39;s outlet, forming present-day Lake Kapowsin.</p><br>
<p>The Tacoma Rail shortline runs along the west side of the lake, as does Orville Road connecting Eatonville to the south with the town of Kapowsin.</p><br>
<p>The lake contains a number of fish species and is stocked with rainbow trout, rated "excellent" for fishing by Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife, as is the yellow perch.</p><br>
<p>The Dupnisa Cave , aka Dupnisa Caves, is a show cave located in Kırklareli Province, northwestern Turkey, close to Bulgarian-Turkish border. The cave itself, unlike what the original name suggests, is actually three, interconnected caves divided into two separate floors. Its name is derived from the Bulgarian word Dupnitsa , related to the word for "hole".</p><br>
<h2>Location</h2><br>
<p>The cave is situated deep in the forest, along the Strandzha Mountain Range, 5.5 km southwest of Sarpdere village and 25 km southwest of Demirköy in Kırklareli Province. It is located at a distance of 58 km from the provincial seat of Kırklareli, and 230 km from the city of Istanbul.</p><br>
<p>The Dupnisa Cave is accessible via the Kırklareli-Dereköy route (State Road ), from the Dereköy-Sarpdere or Kırklareli-Üsküp-Çukurpınar-Sarpdere routes from the north, and on the Vize-Poyralı, Poyralı-Demirköy or the forementioned Demirköy-Sarpdere route from the south.</p><br>
<p>In 1913, Lyubomir Miletich recorded the existence of a Bulgarian-populated chiflik of 15-20 houses named Dunnitsa (Дунница). It was located just south of the modern day Bulgarian-Turkish border, most likely within the immediate vicinity of the cave. The chiflik&#39;s inhabitants were transported to Bulgaria after the Second Balkan War.</p><br>
<h2>Formation and geology</h2><br>
<p>The cave was formed as a result of the marble formations erosion during the Toarcian age of the Early Jurassic epoch, dating back to around 180 Ma. It consists of three interconnected caves and has three entrances, arranged into two separate floors. Each cave is different in hydrologic properties, stalactites and stalagmites. The total length of the Dupnisa Cave is 3,200 m. Two caves, named "Kuru" ("Dry") and "Kız" ("Maiden"), are situated on the upper level running 2,720 m, of which the lower cave, called "Sulu" ("Wet"), is located 60 m underneath. The "Kuru" is extremely rich in terms of stalactites, stalagmites, stalagnates and wall dripstones, reaching massive proportions. It is the source of the spring water flowing into Rezve Creek, the frontier between Turkey and Bulgaria. In contrast, the lower cave contains subterranean streams and lakes with draperies and boxworks over the lakes. The lower cave is at an elevation of 345 m AMSL. The caves exit is 61 m higher than the entrance.</p><br>
<h2>Tourism</h2><br>
<p>The total dissimilarity and variety of the caves make them an attractive tourist destination. The cave was opened to tourism in 2005, and it is the only show cave in East Thrace.</p><br>
<p>The upper cave, "Kız", is not open to the public due to the approximate 60,000 total bats of eleven different species dwelling on the walls and ceilings of the cave. Only 200 m of "Kuru" Cave and 250 m of "Sulu" Cave are open as part of the show cave. The "Kuru" cave is open year-round. The main entrance enters "Sulu" Cave, which is followed by a paved gallery complete with handrails. The passage to the area beyond 250 m is permitted only to experienced cavers for exploring purposes.</p><br>
<p>At the end of the show cave in "Sulu", a staircase leads up to "Kuru" Cave. The main exit is at the end of the gallery at ground level. Return to the entry point is by a marked trail through the woods, which takes around 15 minutes to reach.</p><br>
<p>It was reported that the Dupnisa Cave was visited by over 17,000 domestic and foreign tourists within the first four months of 2012. The number of visitors reached 120,000 in 2013, according to the Deputy Director of Culture and Tourism in Kırklareli.</p><br>
<p>In response to the periodical abundance of bats, the cave is now closed from November 15 until May 15.</p><br>
<p>Neor Lake  is a shallow lake located in a hilly area south of the Iranian Province of Ardabil in the Baghrudagh mountain range in North West Iran. This lake was formed due to two fault zones during the Eocene period.</p><br>
<h2>Geography</h2><br>
<p>The lake is situated at the lower slopes of Baghru Heights of the Talysch</p><br>
<p>Mountains. Elevation of the lake is 2,500 m above mean sea level. It is 48 km to the south east of Ardabil on Khalkhal Road out of which 18 km is a hill section. The lake emerged during the Eocene geologic time scale. The Neor fault and another fault on the western part of the lake, which were active from the Eocene period, have contributed to the emergence of this lake. The basin receives an annual rainfall of 400 mm with cold mountainous climate.</p><br>
<h2>Features</h2><br>
<p>The lake has a water spread area of 220 hectare and is a "seasonally recharged body of water formed over a tectonic depression on the leeward flank of the Talesh (Alborz) Mountains in North West Iran". Heavy siltation has occurred in the lake due to high rainfall incidence, irrigation releases, the physio-chemical reactions, and slope gradient of less than 35%, causing erosion; these factors have resulted in a tropic state of the lake.</p><br>
<p>The lake contains fish species of rainbow trout; fingerlings were introduced with the objective of practicing commercial and sports fishing. Fingerlings are introduced into the lake every year to promote fishery practices. The fish feed on the Gammarus fasciatus found in the lake bed and grow into robust pink-coloured fish. Among the fauna species found in the lake area are ruddy shelduck, and swallows which are the migrant species.</p><br>
<h2>Research findings</h2><br>
<p>A sample of peat deposit (30 cm in diameter core sample) from the bed of the lake, from its northeastern corner, was taken by coring. This was subject to studies to determine the age of the stratification and the type of biodiversity which existed when it was formed. The pollen spectra revealed a 6,500 year old sequence comprising remnants of pollen and beetle. Coprophagous and coprophilous species of pollen were identified. The studies indicated an "open steppe landscape", akin to the present day Irano-Turanian (IT) floristic region in the highlands, in respect of agro-pastoral cultural vocations and the closeness to the eastern mesic temperate Hyrcanian forest. The insect and pollen evidence conforms to the archaeological evidence in the region.</p><br>
<p>The Clearwater Masonic and Grand Army of the Republic Hall is a historic building in Clearwater, Minnesota, United States, constructed in 1888. It has served as a meeting hall for both a local Grand Army of the Republic  post, and a local Masonic Lodge, with commercial space on the ground floor. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979 under the name Clearwater Masonic Lodge–Grand Army of the Republic Hall for having local significance in the themes of architecture and social history. It was nominated for its association with the fraternal organizations of Clearwater and many other rural Wright County communities that, in the words of historian John J. Hackett, "provided leadership, direction, and contributions to the county&#39;s political, educational, patriotic, and social life."</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>The building was constructed jointly by the A.C. Collins Grand Army of the Republic Post No. 112 and Clearwater Masonic Lodge No. 28. The former was one of 192 GAR posts in Minnesota. The Masonic Lodge continues to meet in the building.</p><br>
<p>The meeting halls were on the second floor, while the ground floor was rented to commercial tenants for income, a common arrangement in the region.</p><br>
<p>Wake Forest Historic District is a national historic district located at Wake Forest, Wake County, North Carolina. The district encompasses 245 contributing buildings, one contributing site, and five contributing structures built between about 1890 and 1953 and located in the historic core of the town of Wake Forest. It includes notable examples of Greek Revival and Federal style architecture. Located in the district are the separately listed Lea Laboratory, South Brick House, and the Powell-White House, a contributing resource in the Glen Royall Mill Village Historic District. Other notable buildings include the historic campus of Wake Forest College, Wake Forest Baptist Church , Magnolia Hill , Calvin Jones House , John M. Brewer House , Wait-Taylor House , Taylor-Purefoy-Poteat-Swett House , Community House , St. Catherine of Siena Catholic Church , the Powers Store , and former Water and Light Building .</p><br>
<p>The district was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2003.</p><br>
<p>Sunset Lodge is a historic summer lodge on the shore of Madawaska Lake in rural northern Aroostook County, Maine. It is a peeled log structure, built in 1932 by Bruce Ward, founder of Ward Cedar Log Homes, and early marketer of log structures for recreational and year-round living. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1994.</p><br>
<h2>Description and history</h2><br>
<p>Sunset Lodge stands on a small parcel of landing on South Shore Road, fronting the southern shore of Madawaska Lake, about 0.5 mi west of Maine State Route 161, in an unorganized township west of Stockholm. It is a rectangular single-story structure, with a gable roof, with several attached sheds. The main block and the sheds are fashioned out of peeled logs of red cedar, joined at the corners by V notches and extending beyond the joint by one to two feet. The front, facing the lake, has a pair of sash windows in the first level, and a tilting window at the attic level. The entrance is to the east of the front, set in a shed fashioned out smaller logs joined by butt joints; it is unclear if this was an original part of the design or an early addition. A small gable-roofed addition is attached at the southeast corner, and a shed-roofed screened porch, utilizing similar joinery to the entrance shed, is attached at the southwest corner. The interior is divided into two spaces on the ground floor, with a loft space in the attic that has a log railing.</p><br>
<p>Bruce Ward was born and raised in Aroostook County, and founded the Northern Cedar Company, a lumber mill, in 1927. His early business focused on the production of peeled logs for use as telephone poles, and company lore holds that excess inventory prompted him to consider using them in building construction. The first structure his company built was an American Legion hall in Yarmouth, Maine, in 1931; this summer house was built in 1932 for his family. Two houses, built for year-round occupancy, were later built for the family in Presque Isle. Ward began advertising log home kits in 1935, shipping his products as far away as Wisconsin. Ward&#39;s company was sold out of the family after his death in 1944, and is now known as Ward Cedar Log Homes.</p><br>
<p>Downtown Wake Forest Historic District is a national historic district located at Wake Forest, Wake County, North Carolina. The district encompasses 25 contributing buildings, 1 contributing structure, and 1 contributing object built between about 1890 and 1949 and located in the central business district of the town of Wake Forest. It includes notable examples of Colonial Revival and Art Deco style architecture. Notable buildings include the Lovelace Building , Dick Frye Restaurant , Powers-Barbee Building , Wilkinson Building , B&S Department Store , Arrington Building , Bank of Wake , Wake Forest Post Office , Collegiate Theater , and Wake Forest Post Office .</p><br>
<p>The district was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2002.</p><br>
<p>Longview Gardens Historic District is a historic post-World War II neighborhood and national historic district located 1 1/2-miles east of downtown Raleigh, North Carolina. The district encompasses 189 contributing buildings and five contributing sites. Notable contributing resources include the Raleigh Country Club golf course designed by Donald Ross, Longview Baptist Church  and Milner Memorial Presbyterian Church , both striking examples of Modernist architecture.</p><br>
<p>Developed from 1938-1965 by Clarence Poe, the longtime editor of The Progressive Farmer, Longview Gardens was designed by Richmond, Virginia landscape architect Charles Gillette. A student of the City Beautiful movement, Gillette&#39;s design for Longview Gardens consisted of a pattern of curvilinear streets on both sides of a designed parkway.</p><br>
<p>The Longview Gardens neighborhood grew over a series of three separate phases: 1938-1940, 1948-1948, and 1959. Accordingly, its architectural styles reflect this progression, with the earliest homes constructed in the Colonial Revival and Tudor Revival styles popular before World War II and the later homes constructed in the Ranch and Split-level home styles.</p><br>
<p>Longview Gardens is the largest and most artistically designed mid-20th century subdivision in Raleigh and remains largely intact today.</p><br>
<p>It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in January 2011.</p><br>
<p>South Brick House is a historic home located at Wake Forest, Wake County, North Carolina. The house was built in 1838, and is a 2 1/2-story, double-pile, Greek Revival style brick dwelling with a side gable roof. A number of small, frame additions were made to the rear of the house, beginning in the late-19th century. It features a replacement pedimented portico supported by four Doric order columns. The house retains finely preserved interior decoration from Asher Benjamin’s 1830 pattern book, Practical House Carpenter. Also on the property are the contributing kitchen , smokehouse , and a single-story, side-gabled, weatherboarded, frame house . The house was originally built as faculty accommodation for Wake Forest Institute.</p><br>
<p>It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2014. It is located in the Wake Forest Historic District.</p><br>
<p>Merrimon-Wynne House, also known as the Merrimon House and Wynne Hall, is a historic home located at Raleigh, Wake County, North Carolina. The house was built about 1875, and is a two-story, four bay, Italianate style frame dwelling with a cross-gabled roof and somewhat irregular massing. It is sheathed in weatherboard and features a Stick Style / Eastlake Movement front porch with abundant ornamentation. The house was remodeled and complementary bay windows added about 1910. The house was built by Senator Augustus Summerfield Merrimon .</p><br>
<p>The property was previously listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 1975 as the Merrimon House, when it stood at 526 North Wilmington Street. It was delisted in 2008. It was relisted on the National Register of Historic Places in 2014, following the move to its present location in 2013.</p><br>

<p>The range is located in the northern region of Haiti, in the departments of the Nord and in Artibonite. The range&#39;s altitude varies from 600 -.</p><br>
<p>It is the western extension of the Cordillera Central that runs through the Dominican Republic. This channel extends to the northwest under the name of the Chaîne du Haut-Piton.</p><br>
<p>A narrow northern coastal plain lies north of the range on the Caribbean Sea. The Guayamouc River flows south from the range.</p><br>
<p>The Massif du Nord separates the city of Cap-Haïtien from the capital Port-au-Prince.</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>After the Haitian Revolution, the Citadelle Laferrière was built by King Henri Christophe. It overlooks the city of Cap-Haïtien from its height of 865 meters.</p><br>
<p>Mallow Castle is a National Monument situated off the N72 on Bridewell Lane, Mallow, County Cork, Ireland.</p><br>
<h2>Description</h2><br>
<p>The 33 acre site is composed gardens and parkland on which three buildings sit: the remains of a 16th-century fortified house, a 19th-century mansion to the north, and the ruins of a 13th-century castle to the east. The fortified house is a long rectangular three-storey building, with two polygonal towers on the north-west and south-west corners. It is early Jacobean in style, featuring high gables, stepped battlements, and mullioned windows.</p><br>
<p>The 19th-century baronial mansion has parts which date to the 1690s and is situated near the older ruined Mallow Castle. As a refurbished building it features 8 reception rooms, which include a music room, a billiard room and a library, as well as 12 bedrooms.</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>The fortified house dates from the 16th century and is believed to have been built by Sir Thomas Norreys before his death 1599. Following his death, his niece Elizabeth and her husband Sir John Jephson inherited the house, with their family remaining in Mallow for almost 400 years. It was placed under siege by Richard Butler, Lord Mountgarret, in 1642 during the Irish Confederate Wars and did not fall. It was captured in 1645 by James Tuchet, Lord Castlehaven. The house was badly damaged by fire during the Williamite War and subsequently abandoned by the Jephsons. The Jephsons built the new mansion house on the site of the older castle&#39;s stable block.</p><br>
<h2>Current use</h2><br>
<p>The fortified house was made a National Monument in 1928. Commander Maurice Jephson sold the mansion to the McGinn family of Washington, D.C., in 1984. The castle and the grounds have been in the possession of Cork County Council since 2011.</p><br>
<p>The Nathaniel Halderman House is a historic house located at 728 East Washington Street in Mount Carroll, Illinois. The house was built in 1854 for Nathaniel Halderman, an early settler of Carroll County. Halderman came to the county in 1841; he partnered with other early settlers to plat Mount Carroll and build the towns first mill. He also served as the citys first mayor and was later Carroll Countys treasurer. Jacob Emmert, one of Haldermans business partners, built the Italianate house using brick from the citys brickyard. The houses design features an open porch along the front, a cornice with paired brackets, and a cupola atop the roof.</p><br>

<p>Grand Mound Town Hall and Waterworks Historic District, also known as Hose house, pump house, is a historic district located in Grand Mound, Iowa, United States. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2001. The district is composed of two buildings and the town&#39;s water tower.</p><br>
<h2>Town Hall</h2><br>
<p>The former town hall is a two-story frame structure with a gable front. It was designed by Gustav Ahlff, who owned a local lumber yard, weigh station, and clay tile manufacturing company. It is a 20 by structure. The main facade is three bays wide. The first floor features a central garage door that is flanked by two windows. The second floor has three windows that match those on the first floor. The entrance to the upstairs is on the south side of the east elevation. The building is capped with a belfry with a bell. The original bell is now part of a monument located in front of the pump house. The interior of the building features a single room on each floor, and a stairway at the back of the building. It is thought that an area on the main floors southwest corner may have been the location of an early jail that consisted of a single cell.</p><br>
<p>The building lacks ornamentation because the town council did not think it was appropriate to build a monument to themselves or to the government with taxpayer dollars. Henry Ehlers submitted the lowest bid of $675, which was accepted on July 2, 1892. After it was built the town hall was used by a variety social groups in addition to town government. A town marshal was hired in 1894 and the jail cell was created at that time and was used until 1936. Besides the jail cell, the first floor was used to house the town&#39;s fire-fighting equipment. The second floor was used as a council chambers until a new town hall was built in 1955. The old building became known as the "Pump House", although there is no evidence that it was ever used for that purpose.</p><br>
<h2>Pump House</h2><br>
<p>Grand Mound installed its first water system in 1898 and built a frame building to house it. Oral tradition in the town relates that the original pump was destroyed by an explosion caused by a spark set off by the fuel. The present building was built on the location of the original pump house in 1915. The single-story brick structure measures 20 by. The main facade features a shallow stepped gable. The main entrance is flanked by windows, and a secondary entrance is located on the east side. Additions were added to the rear and east sides of the structure. The first addition is 11 by and constructed of brick. The brick, however, does not match that of the original structure. It is located on the west side of the south elevation. Another addition is a garage that is composed of cement block. The pumping equipment was replaced in the late 1960s. A prefabricated pavilion was built behind the pump house in 1968 for picnics that are routinely held on the property.</p><br>
<h2>Water Tower</h2><br>
<p>The tank for the previous water tower, located on the square at Fulton and Smith Streets, had been condemned in 1914. The present water tower was built and a deep well was dug in 1915. The water tower is 80 ft feet tall and it is capped with a 50,000 gal steel tank. The trusses that make up the tower are 32 ft apart. The tank is 32 ft in diameter. It was designed by the Iowa Engineering Company of Clinton, Iowa, and constructed by the Des Moines Bridge and Iron Company.</p><br>
<p>The Caroline Mark Home is a historic retirement home located at 222 East Lincoln Street in Mount Carroll, Illinois. The home was built in 1906 through an endowment made in Caroline Marks estate. Mark, who died in 1900, and her husband James were longtime Mount Carroll residents; as James was president of the citys First National Bank, the two were quite wealthy. Mark bequeathed her estate to provide housing for the areas elderly women, who were often poor and had little to no social support. The home was built and operated using the funds from her estate and is still funded by the income provided by Marks real estate holdings. The building has a Craftsman design with buttered masonry joints, corbelled brickwork, and reinforced concrete floors to provide long-term structural integrity.</p><br>

<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>The three-storey timber signal cabin at Ipswich containing an 1881 McKenzie and Holland mechanical interlocking signal frame and the nearby locomotive turntable and semaphore signal were once important components of the Ipswich railway station infrastructure.</p><br>
<p>The early governments of Queensland placed a high importance on providing reliable transport from the coastal cities to the productive interior regions and it was one of the motivating factors for the 1859 separation of Queensland from New South Wales.</p><br>
<p>The first railway in Queensland started from Ipswich, a provincial centre, rather than the capital Brisbane, because it was thought that river transport adequately linked Brisbane and Ipswich and that the major need was to improve transport between Ipswich and the productive Darling Downs agricultural region. Work started in early 1864 and the first section of line, from Ipswich to Grandchester, was opened in 1865, gradually extending to the Darling Downs and eventually further west. Ipswich and Brisbane were linked by rail in 1875.</p><br>
<p>Although the Ipswich railway workshops were at North Ipswich, the railway station was in the centre of the town, on the southern side of the Bremer River. The line from the station passed over a combined rail/road bridge across the river. It then passed through the workshops, continued beside the river, crossed Mihi Creek and on to Grandchester and the Darling Downs.</p><br>
<p>There have been three railway stations at Ipswich, all situated close to the same site. The first was immediately south of the Bremer River Bridge and opened on 31 July 1865. When the extension from Ipswich to Sherwood in Brisbane opened on 5 October 1874, space did not allow a direct connection and the trains had to reverse. Trains from Brisbane had to pass the junction then reversed in, while those from Toowoomba could run straight into the station but had to reverse out before continuing to Brisbane. When the Ipswich deviation was opened on 26 April 1875 it provided a direct line through Ipswich.</p><br>
<p>Where more than one train uses a railway line it is important to avoid train movements that may result in a collision. Early methods to prevent this included a Staff and Ticket relay system where a physical token was carried on the train and was passed to the next train travelling in the opposite direction before it could proceed. An Electric Staff functioning as part of an electronic system was introduced later, but operated on much the same principle. With the ongoing growth of the rail network, and where train movements have become more frequent and complex, the further evolution of safeworking has seen the development of Centralised Train Control (CTC). This is a system where the signals and points controlling movement are operated from a remote computer location. Within Queensland Rail other forms of train control are now replacing or augmenting this system also.</p><br>
<p>An interlocked yard is a railway yard where semaphore or coloured light signals are controlled in such a way that signals cannot be set to proceed unless the points that operate in conjunction with the signals are correctly set. A mechanical interlocking device is a system of rods, sliding bars and levers that are configured so that points cannot be changed in conflict, thus preventing movements that may cause a collision or other accident.</p><br>
<p>The earliest designs used various ingenious and patented methods to interlock the levers. Stevens & Sons invented a tappet system that later became almost universal but didn&#39;t renew their patent so that this system was adopted by many other manufacturers.</p><br>
<p>McKenzie and Holland (originally McKenzie, Clunes & Holland) were one of the earliest signalling contractors in Britain and supplied many railway companies, though few of these mechanisms now survive. In 1873 they introduced a new design of lever frame that would set the style of all frames to come. A dogleg on the shape of the levers allowed them to stand upright in the frame when in the normal position, which made them easier for a signalman to use. The locking mechanism was known as cam and soldier rotary locking and remained in use for many years, although later models refined the design.</p><br>
<p>At the Sydney International Exhibition in Sydney in 1880, Arthur Orpen Herbert, the Commissioner for Queensland Railway, was impressed by a display of McKenzie and Holland interlocking machines. The New South Wales Government bought the equipment on display, using it for the first installation in Australia. Queensland ordered the same equipment for Roma Street and Ipswich stations and this arrived in October 1881. Although the interlocking mechanism was a major factor in ensuring safety at busy stations, traffic on much of Queensland&#39;s railway lines was insufficient to warrant the installation of the expensive machinery required and most lines obtained safeworking by staff and ticket or a similar system. The fact that the only mechanism installed in Queensland outside Brisbane was at Ipswich suggests a high level of traffic at Ipswich and its importance as a railway centre.</p><br>
<p>At Ipswich, a contract was immediately let for a signal cabin and the interlocking was completed in late 1883. The design of this first cabin is unknown, but signal cabins in Australia have followed precedents that proved successful overseas and the current signal box generally resembles elevated cabins built by McKenzie and Holland in Britain. On 12 August 1895 a contract was let to W. Chaplain to build a new signal cabin and this is the cabin now in place. It controlled train movements between Thomas Street and East Ipswich railway stations and to the Railway Workshops across the river. The cabin is unusual in being three, rather than two storeys high, its location making this necessary, so that the signalman could see over the top of the bridge and also the main line to the west.</p><br>
<p>A contract to build a new station on the through line, in a cutting, was let to Henry Wyman on 9 March 1886. This opened on 17 October 1887. This station had one through platform with dock platforms at either end. Extensive alterations were planned and began in 1914. It was intended to include a new station building west of the original station on the through alignment between West and Waghorn Streets, though this was not built. Work completed included a subway in line with West Street, a new platform and the foundations for the proposed station. A new 60-foot turntable was installed as part of these alterations in 1921, replacing a 41-foot turntable that was too short to accommodate the new locomotives. Electropneumatic signalling and interlocking was to be installed, but was installed at Gympie instead, so that Ipswich retained its mechanical interlocking system. A third railway station was eventually built in 1974.</p><br>
<p>The other major feature remaining from the railway infrastructure is a locomotive turntable. Ipswich station was unusual for a major station in having only a single line, as the double track main line between Brisbane and Toowoomba was slewed to pass through the station, which only had one through platform face, other platforms being dead ends. A turntable provides for the rotation of locomotives, being a section of line mounted on a rotating platform with the operating mechanism beneath. As part of the station yard alterations in 1921, a new 60-foot (19 metre) turntable was provided near the elevated signal cabin, replacing the old 41-foot (13 metre) turntable that was too short for modern steam locomotives. An English Cowan Sheldon and Co Ltd no 10297 motor that was installed in 1957 operates it.</p><br>
<p>Diesel electric locomotives replaced steam locomotives on Queensland railways during the 1960s, with Ipswich being the last fully dedicated steam locomotive depot in southern Queensland. They could travel in either direction without turning so that turntables became unnecessary and many turntables and fork lines have been removed, so that they are now uncommon. The turntable at Ipswich was in use for both steam and diesel a locomotive when many locomotive hauled trains terminated there. The turntable is still a part of QR operations and is still used for turning steam locomotives.</p><br>
<p>Although Ipswich was only the second station in Queensland to have mechanical interlocking installed, it was retained long after its withdrawal from Roma Street. The technology became obsolete, as electrical interlocking or electro-pneumatic systems replaced mechanical interlocking. Computerised Centralised Traffic Control signalling systems that allow control of trains, generally from a single dedicated location up to several hundred kilometres away, now control most of the network.</p><br>
<p>The section of railway yard containing the signal cabin and turntable has been isolated from the railway station by the development of a large modern shopping centre. The signal cabin was de-commissioned in 1995.</p><br>
<p>Positioned on the former main line leading to the Ipswich Railway Workshops is a semaphore signal and mast to the north of the signal cabin, which is now a rare surviving example in Queensland on the main line.</p><br>
<h2>Description</h2><br>
<p>The elevated timber signal cabin and adjacent turntable are situated close together to the east of the bridge across the Bremer River and are faced on three sides by the exterior walls of a large shopping centre.</p><br>
<p>The elevated signal cabin is a rectangular timber structure three storeys high. It has a gabled roof clad in corrugated iron sheeting with a timber finial at each end. The cabin houses a 55-lever T-bar interlocking machine by MacKenzie and Holland. The top level houses the signal levers and good visibility is provided for the signalman by banks of windows to each side. The machinery to which the levers are connected is below and single windows light the two lower levels.</p><br>
<p>An external staircase on the north side gives access to a door on the second level and leads to a narrow landing on the top floor, which is shaded by a roof. The structure contains a pericope for signalmen to obtain a view under the adjoining vehicular bridges over the rail corridor. There is a Synchrome Electric clock on the northern elevation. There is also a semaphore signal mast to the north of the signal cabin.</p><br>
<p>The turntable is situated to the north east of the signal cabin. It is a standard 60-foot table with pneumatic motor, originally powered by the Westinghouse air brake pump and system on the steam locomotive.</p><br>
<h2>Heritage listing</h2><br>
<p>Railway Signal Cabin and Turntable was listed on the Queensland Heritage Register on 27 May 2005 having satisfied the following criteria.</p><br>
<p>The place is important in demonstrating the evolution or pattern of Queensland&#39;s history.</p><br>
<p>The Railway Signal Cabin with its mechanically interlocked signalling system and Turntable for positioning and turning steam locomotives are evidence of the development of rail transport in Queensland. As the earliest such interlocking system outside the capital, it demonstrates the importance of Ipswich as a railway centre when the establishment of a railway network was seen as the key to encouraging wider settlement in Queensland and providing reliable transport for people, goods and raw materials between the coastal cities and the productive interior regions.</p><br>
<p>The place demonstrates rare, uncommon or endangered aspects of Queensland&#39;s cultural heritage.</p><br>
<p>The McKenzie and Holland mechanism for controlling signals, and consequently train movements, was installed in 1883 as one of only two in Queensland, the other being at Roma Street in Brisbane and which has not survived. It is now rare in Australia, as very few signal boxes survive with mechanical interlocking systems in place, particularly of such an early date.</p><br>
<p>The place is important in demonstrating the principal characteristics of a particular class of cultural places.</p><br>
<p>The elevated signal cabin is the largest and best surviving example of its type, which is now rare in Queensland, as is the turntable and the semaphore signal. The signal frame is the second largest ever used in Queensland.</p><br>

<p>The interlocking system, semaphore signal and the locomotive turntable are good examples of an obsolete technology that was vital to the safe operation of the railway and were technically sophisticated at the time of their commissioning. The signal cabin demonstrates the characteristics of its type well, being elevated and positioned to provide commanding sightlines for the signalman. The top level has banks of windows to provide a good view and lighting. This level houses the lever frame and the level below contains the mechanism. The turntable is a good example of its type, being operational and recently serviced, and in its original location.</p><br>
<p>The McKenzie and Holland interlocking frame represents the most advanced technology available in its field at the time of its manufacture and made a major contribution to the safety of rail travel.</p><br>
<p>Bremer River Rail Bridge is a heritage-listed railway bridge at off Bremer Street, North Ipswich, City of Ipswich, Queensland, Australia. It was built from 1865 to 1915. It was added to the Queensland Heritage Register on 11 December 2006.</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>The Bremer River Railway Bridge (1915) and the adjacent cast-iron piers (1897) and masonry bridge abutments (1897 and 1865) are located on the banks of the Bremer River near the business centre of Ipswich. The 1865 abutments are the remains of the most substantial bridge on the Main line railway, the first railway to be constructed in Queensland.</p><br>
<p>Queensland&#39;s colonial government fostered the development of railways as a means of developing Queensland and providing social benefits. It was argued that rail would reduce freight costs and save travel time for passengers. An added incentive for rail development in Queensland was the very poor state of the roads. In wet weather especially, this hampered the transport of freight. Priority was initially given to providing a railway link to coastal ports for the well-established and influential pastoralists of the Darling Downs.</p><br>
<p>Ipswich was chosen as the eastern terminus of the railway because of its importance to the Darling Downs pastoralists. The township was a river port, the head of navigation, located at the intersection of routes to the Darling Downs and Upper Brisbane Valley. It was a major inland port servicing the Darling Downs and Ipswich residents together with many pastoralists cherished the hope that the town might become Queensland&#39;s capital. Brisbane eventually assumed that role but Ipswich remained an important regional centre.</p><br>
<p>North Ipswich was originally chosen as the site for the terminus. However, the residents of Ipswich had wanted a high-level bridge to connect north and south Ipswich since the early 1860s. So it was decided to extend the railway to south Ipswich by building a road-rail bridge across the Bremer River. This extension added to the overall cost of the line without contributing to the efficiency of the route. Extra expenditure was needed for the bridge and the additional three kilometres of line needed to reach the new site.</p><br>
<p>Abraham Fitzgibbon, later engaged as Queensland&#39;s first Commissioner for Railways, was appointed Chief Engineer on contract and Sir Charles Fox and Son, an engineering firm based in England, were appointed as consulting engineers. Peto, Brassey and Betts, contractors with worldwide railway construction experience, were engaged to construct the line, including the Bremer River Bridge. Several months prior to the completion of the line, operating staff also began to be recruited.</p><br>
<p>The original North Ipswich Railway Workshops were completed in 1864 on a cramped site adjacent to the Bremer River close to the northern end of the planned bridge. It soon began to produce rolling stock for the new railway completing an engine truck in 1865 and ten wagons in the following year.</p><br>
<p>The first Bremer River bridge was designed by Sir Charles Fox and Son and pre-fabricated in Britain. This may explain the pin-jointed members, as these would have simplified the task of assembly in an economy with little skilled labour and unsophisticated manufacturing technology.</p><br>
<p>It was a deck-type iron bridge with pin-jointed lattice girders on cast-iron cylinder piers. It had substantial abutments (extant) made from sandstone, similar to that used in the abutments of the Heiner Road Bridge over the former Wharf Branch Line. The stone is believed to have been quarried locally at Denmark Hill. Comprising three spans of 150 ft (45.7m), it was 67 ft (20.4m) above the high tide level. 12 ft (3.7m) of the width of the bridge was reserved for rail and 23 ft (7m) for general traffic. It was an uncommon example of a road-rail bridge and this explains its wide abutments.</p><br>
<p>The Bremer River Rail Bridge was not the first iron bridge to be completed on the line. The first was completed in April 1865 and crossed Wide Gully. However, the Bremer Bridge was described in the Brisbane Courier (1 August 1865) as "the most important structure on the first section of the line".</p><br>
<p>By Saturday, 29 July 1865, the bridge was sufficiently complete to allow a locomotive to cross safely carrying Arthur Macalister (the Lands and Works Minister) and Abram Fitzgibon. On 31 July, Governor George Bowen officially opened the railway at Bigge&#39;s Camp (now Grandchester), the western terminus of the line. Abram Fitzgibbon, Albert John Hockings (the Mayor of Brisbane) and Robert Herbert (the Colonial Secretary), also participated in the ceremony attended by a large contingent of pastoralists.</p><br>
<p>By 1866, it became evident that the northern abutment of the bridge was inadequately designed. A report in March 1867 cited inadequate foundations, poor quality masonry and lack of drainage as the cause of the problems. It had to be rebuilt following a flood in May 1867, when cracks appeared under each girder and nearly every stone in the face showed signs of fracture or damage.</p><br>
<p>In 1875, with the opening of the Ipswich Deviation, the main western line bypassed the Bremer Bridge. Nevertheless, the bridge continued to carry increasingly heavy loads. This is because it provided access to local coalmines and, more significantly, the North Ipswich Railway Workshops, Queensland&#39;s largest facility for manufacturing and maintaining steam locomotives and rolling stock. Expansion of the site took place in 1877 and in 1884 construction of new and larger workshops commenced at an adjacent site.</p><br>
<p>Given the ongoing expansion of the Workshops and Queensland Government Railways&#39; program of continually upgrading its locomotives to more powerful ones, the bridge was required to bear a growing volume of traffic including increasingly weighty locomotives en route to or from the Workshops.</p><br>
<p>In 1881 the new Ipswich signal cabin and state of the art interlocking mechanism was installed at the southern end of the bridge at the junction of the main western line and the line across the bridge to the Workshops. The cabin of the signal box was unusual in being three, rather than two storeys high, so that the signalman could see over the top of the bridge and also the main line to the west. It was the only such mechanism to be installed in Queensland outside Brisbane at the time and this is indicative of the high volume of traffic passing through the junction.</p><br>
<p>In October 1893, it was found that the cross girders of the old bridge were overstrained and in many cases showed fracture of the material. A March 1894 memo to the Chief Engineer&#39;s Office stated that the bridge was no longer strong enough to carry the current traffic. Instead of recommending the bridge be reinforced, it proposed that a new bridge should be built. This was partly prompted by on-going problems that had been experienced with the Ipswich Town Council over maintenance of the shared bridge. It was decided to transfer the old bridge to council ownership for the exclusive use of road traffic. The contract for the new bridge was let in January 1896.</p><br>
<p>This bridge was constructed by Beatty and Walsh under the supervision of Government Engineer, F. L. Keir. The resident engineer was C. S. Graham. Messrs J. W. Sutton and Co. of Brisbane cast the cylinder piers and made the girders. The 1897 Bremer River Bridge and the Indooroopilly Bridge were the first to be riveted using a pneumatic machine.</p><br>
<p>The bridge was a three-span, six-panel, through Pratt truss design resting on concrete filled cylinder piers. It is believed to have been the first bridge to use a Pratt truss on Queensland railways. Like the earlier bridge, it had masonry abutments; these, together with the piers, are still extant. The new bridge only carried a single set of rails. Its substructure was painted maroon and its superstructure French grey.</p><br>
<p>First introduced in, Pratt truss bridges became Queensland Government Railway&#39;s preferred form for major spans until the adoption of reinforced concrete. Patented by Americans Caleb and Thomas Pratt in 1844, the Pratt truss was a very popular design in the United States. The design was such that lighter materials could be used in construction. The diagonal members could be thinner since they were subject to tension forces only and the trusses were deeper enabling the use of bracing across the top members. This stabilised the trusses thus allowing lighter members to be used. This resulted in a more cost-efficient design.</p><br>
<p>A major expansion of the Ipswich Workshops at the beginning of the 1900s, together with further upgrades of locomotives led to constantly increasing demands on the bridge. The first 12-ton axle load engines, the B17 locomotives, were built at the Workshops between 1911 and 1914. In 1913, the Workshops commenced building C18 locomotives. Together with their C19 derivative, these were the largest conventional locomotives ever to run on the Queensland Government&#39;s railways.</p><br>
<p>Between 1913 and 1915, the substructure of the 1897 bridge was widened and a third bridge (still extant) was built with stronger spans. Like the 1897 bridge, it was a through Pratt truss design. The new bridge was strong enough to carry all of the locomotives in use at the time but the 1897 bridge was restricted to C16/C17 locomotives and was used for shunting operations only.</p><br>
<p>In March 1967, the 1865 bridge was demolished. It had been rendered redundant in 1965 by the construction of the David Trumpy road bridge. The 1897 bridge was removed in 1987 leaving just the extant span on double track piers.</p><br>
<h2>Description</h2><br>
<p>The Bremer River Rail Bridge and old bridge abutments are made up of a railway bridge that is still in use and the sandstone abutments of two bridges, now removed, that were located immediately to the east of it. On the south side of the river, the bridge and abutments are set in riverside parklands in the business centre of Ipswich. The north side of the bridge and the adjacent north bank abutments are situated in a commercial development.</p><br>
<h3>1865 abutments</h3><br>
<p>The 1865 abutments are physically separate from the other structures a short distance to the east of them.</p><br>
<p>Made of light coloured, rusticated sandstone blocks, they are wide, massive structures set into the banks of the river. The lower section of the northern abutment is wider than the upper section, forming a kind of plinth. On the southern abutment, the lower courses of sandstone are mostly buried. A sandstone parapet wall is extant along the eastern and western ends at the top of each abutment. Shallow buttresses project from the corners facing the river.</p><br>
<p>Narrow, horizontal sandstone mouldings running the length of each face divide the facades into horizontal sections. On both abutments a moulding runs along the top of the bottom section, the upper section and the wall.</p><br>
<p>1897 abutments and piers These abutments form part of the abutments of the 1915 bridge. They are massive but narrower than the 1865 abutments. Like the 1865 abutments they are set into the riverbank. The 1897 abutments are made of rusticated sandstone blocks darker in hue than the blocks of the earlier abutments. A masonry cornice runs around the top of the wall.</p><br>
<p>A sandstone parapet wall runs along the eastern edge at the top of each abutment. The walls terminate in rectangular sandstone columns. These columns extend downwards to form pilasters on the eastern facades of the abutments. A narrow projecting sandstone coping runs along the top of each parapet wall.</p><br>
<p>The dark grey, cast iron cylinder piers that supported the 1897 bridge are still extant. These have wide bases that taper sharply inwards at about one third of the height of the piers. The bridge was supported at two points across the river. At each point is a pair of piers. The bridge sat atop a steel girder that is still extant resting between the tops of each pair. Narrow horizontal members and diagonal braces join each pair of piers at three points between the top and bottom.</p><br>
<h3>1915 bridge</h3><br>
<p>The 1915 bridge comprises three 45.7m spans of riveted, five-panel, through Pratt trusses. Truss bridges usually comprise a combination of vertical and diagonal members fixed between a pair of horizontal girders. Pratt trusses are characterised by diagonal members that slant down, inwards towards the centre of the span. A single railway line passes between the trusses of the Bremer River Bridge and timber decking fills the area between the rails and the structural members of the bridge.</p><br>
<p>The bridge has concrete abutments designed to match the adjacent sandstone abutments of the 1897 bridge. The cornicing of the 1897 abutments continues around the top of the 1915 abutments. A sandstone parapet wall similar to the one on the 1897 abutment runs along the western edge.</p><br>
<p>At each of the support points for the 1897 bridge, a third pier, identical in design to the earlier ones, was erected and the supporting beam was extended to support the 1915 bridge.</p><br>
<h2>Heritage listing</h2><br>
<p>The Bremer River Rail Bridge and pylons and abutments of old bridges were listed on the Queensland Heritage Register on 11 December 2006 having satisfied the following criteria.</p><br>
<p>The place is important in demonstrating the evolution or pattern of Queensland&#39;s history.</p><br>
<p>The earliest masonry bridge abutments (1865), adjacent to the Bremer River Rail Bridge in Ipswich, are important in demonstrating the development of Queenslands history insofar that they constitute physical evidence of the establishment of Queenslands first railway, an important step in the development of the State. They are all that remain of the first Bremer River Road-Rail Bridge, the most substantial structure on this railway. The siting of the 1865 abutments reflects the priorities that influenced the decisions of the Government of the day. Southern Queensland was chosen as the location of the State&#39;s first railway because of the priority given to providing a rail link to the coast for the Darling Downs pastoralists. Ipswich was chosen as the eastern terminus because of its importance to the Darling Downs pastoralists as a regional centre and the head of navigation. The location of the bridge within Ipswich was influenced by local demands for a high-level road bridge across the Bremer River.</p><br>
<p>As an uncommon conjunction on one site of a railway bridge and the remains of two earlier bridges (1865 abutments, 1897 abutments and piers, and 1915 bridge), the Bremer River Bridge structures, as a group, are important in demonstrating the evolution of bridge abutment design and the effect of changing locomotive technology on bridges in Queenslands rail system from its inception until the construction of the most recent bridge in 1915. Three bridges were successively built on the site because of the need to continually upgrade infrastructure as Queensland Government Railways adopted more powerful, heavier, locomotives. Together with the important Railway Signal Cabin and Turntable located at their southern end, the bridges formed important infrastructure supporting the operation of the North Ipswich Railway Workshops. This infrastructure contributes to our knowledge of the operations of the Workshops, which was Queenslands largest facility for the manufacture and maintenance of steam locomotives and rolling stock. As the only rail link to the Workshops from the early 1870s, the Bremer River Bridges were a vital part of its operations and had a relationship to the weight and power of the locomotives being manufactured and serviced by the Workshops at this time.</p><br>
<p>The place demonstrates rare, uncommon or endangered aspects of Queensland&#39;s cultural heritage.</p><br>
<p>The 1865 abutments are rare surviving remnants of Queensland&#39;s first railway line. The only other known extant components of the line include some masonry culverts and Grandchester railway station.</p><br>
<p>The place is important in demonstrating the principal characteristics of a particular class of cultural places.</p><br>
<p>The 1865 and 1897 abutments are examples of masonry bridge abutments from the 19th Century and as such, are important in demonstrating the principal characteristics of this type of structure. They are wide, massive structures set into the banks of the river. Masonry parapet walls run along the edges at the top.The 1915 bridge is important as an intact example of a through Pratt truss railway bridge from the early 20th Century. Introduced, the Pratt truss became a popular design for major spans.</p><br>
<p>The place has a special association with the life or work of a particular person, group or organisation of importance in Queensland&#39;s history.</p><br>
<p>As part of the first Queensland railway line, the 1865 bridge abutments are closely linked to the inception of Queensland Rail and so have a special association with this important Queensland organisation. Abraham Fitzgibbon, the Chief Engineer for the construction of the line, was also Queenslands first Commissioner for Railways. Operating staff for the new railways department were appointed just prior to the railways opening and the line was the first to be operated by them.</p><br>
<p>Mordecai Place Historic District is a historic neighborhood and national historic district located at Raleigh, North Carolina. The district encompasses 182 contributing buildings and 1 contributing object in the most architecturally varied of Raleigh&#39;s early-20th century suburbs for the white middle-class. Mordecai Place was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in February 1998, with a boundary increase in 2000.</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>The land was originally home to a plantation house built by Joel Lane in 1785. About 1824 the house underwent significant alterations that resulted in the Greek Revival dwelling that is today a house museum. Beginning in 1916, land south of the house was sold and subdivided for residential development. When the Mordecai family sold the land, it made multiple stipulations. The neighborhood was named in honor of the plantation, and only whites could live on most of the land (about eighteen acres near the railroad could either be sold for residences for African Americans or used for factories).</p><br>
<h2>Building styles</h2><br>
<p>Mordecai Place was developed between about 1900 to the 1950s and includes notable examples of Colonial Revival, Classical Revival, Dutch Colonial Revival, Spanish Mission Revival, Tudor Revival, Italian Renaissance Revival and Bungalow / American Craftsman style architecture. Within the district is the Mordecai Historic Park, which includes the separately listed Mordecai House. Other notable buildings are the former Pilot School and the Pilot Baptist Church (c. 1917). There are also a few examples of a more typically rural vernacular style, the two-story, side-gabled I-house. Towards the middle of the twentieth century, smaller Cape Cods and Minimal Traditional houses were built.</p><br>
<p>The Gen. Alexander Campbell House is a historic house on United States Route 1 in Cherryfield, Maine. Built in 1790, the originally Federal-style house underwent a number of alterations in 19th century, and now has a somewhat Victorian appearance. The house is notable for being built by Alexander Campbell, a leading figure of Down East Maine during the American Revolutionary War and the subsequent decades. The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1977, and is a contributing element of the Cherryfield Historic District.</p><br>
<h2>Description and history</h2><br>
<p>The General Alexander Campbell House is located on the north side of United States Route 1, near the eastern end of the village of Cherryfield, atop the village&#39;s highest point. It is an L-shaped two story wood frame structure, with a hip roof, twin interior chimneys, and clapboard siding. Its main entrance is centered in the southern (street-facing) facade, framed by pilasters and a gabled pediment. It is flanked on either side by Italianate polygonal window bays; the upper story of the facade has five sash windows. The western facade, the long portion of the L, has a porch extending along much of its length, with square posts, carved brackets, and a jigsawn balustrade.</p><br>
<p>Alexander Campbell was born in Georgetown, Maine in 1731, and was involved in military affairs during the French and Indian War, serving in the local militia during the siege of Quebec in 1759. Sometime after 1768, he moved to Cherryfield, where he established a successful lumber mill. During the American Revolutionary War he was again active in the local militia, serving in the defense of Machias in the 1777 Battle of Machias and in the 1779 Penobscot Expedition. He was also politically active, reporting to the Massachusetts legislature (Maine then being a part of that state) on the state of affairs in eastern Maine. He built this fine Federal period house in 1790, and died in 1807. His descendants were responsible for the later Victorian alterations.</p><br>
<p>Raleigh Water Works and E.B. Bain Water Treatment Plant is a historic water works complex located at Raleigh, North Carolina. The original section was built in 1941, with additions made about 1946-1947, and in the 1960s. The</p><br>
<p>complex includes the shell of the original one-story, brick pump house (1887 with 1923 alterations); the one-story, brick filter house (1887); and the Art Deco treatment plant (1939-1940) with adjacent settling basins. The main block of the treatment plant is a three-story, three-bay wide mass topped by a hipped, battened metal roof, with flanking stepped back two-story sections. Also on the property are three storage reservoirs for treated water, dating from 1887, 1940 and the 1950s.</p><br>
<p>It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1999.</p><br>
<p>Mahler and Carolina Trust Buildings, also known as McLellans Dime Store and McCrorys Dime Store, are two historic commercial buildings located at Raleigh, North Carolina. The Mahler Building was built in 1876, and the Carolina Trust Building was built in 1902. They were consolidated as McLellan&#39;s Dime Store about 1933. A two-story annex was added to the building in 1952. The Mahler Building is a three-story, three bay, Renaissance Revival style brick building with round arched windows. The Carolina Trust Building is a four-story, three bay, Classical Revival style brick building. The annex is a two-story, seven bay, addition with Art Moderne design elements.</p><br>
<p>It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2000. It is located in the Fayetteville Street Historic District.</p><br>
<p>North Carolina School for the Blind and Deaf Dormitory, also known as the Old Health Building, is a historic dormitory building located at Raleigh, North Carolina. It was designed by the noted architect Frank Pierce Milburn and built in 1898. It is a 3 1/2-story, rectangular, red brick, Châteauesque style building. It features a dramatic, towered dormered roofline and measures 104 feet wide and 85 feet deep. It consists of a rectangular block with parapeted gabled pavilions, three-story engaged towers, and a three-story rear wing. It is the only remaining structure of the North Carolina School for the Blind and Deaf. After the school moved to a new location in 1923, the building housed state offices.</p><br>
<p>It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1976.</p><br>
<p>Occidental Life Insurance Company Building is a historic office building located at Raleigh, North Carolina. The building is located in Cameron Village, North Carolina&#39;s first suburban shopping center. It was built in 1956, and is a four-story, 68,000 square-foot steel frame structure encapsulated in concrete. The building was design by architecture firm Kemp, Bunch & Jackson and in the International Style. It has a brick base, limestone walls, aluminum windows with green-tinted glass, and entrance canopies with rounded aluminum eaves. Prior to moving to this building, the Occidental Life Insurance Company offices were housed in the Professional Building for nearly 30 years.</p><br>
<p>It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2003.</p><br>
<p>Farmers and Merchants Savings Bank, also known as Union Savings Bank and First Trust and Savings Bank, is an historic building located in Grand Mound, Iowa, United States. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2001.</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>Farmers and Merchants Savings Bank was founded in 1912. It was originally located in the Dugan&#39;s Saloon building with is diagonally across the street from the present building. The land on which the bank now sits was purchased in 1919, and the Lytle Company of Sioux City, Iowa drew up the plans in 1921. The present building was constructed from 1922 to 1923. It was prominently located along the most important business corner in Grand Mound, Clinton and Smith Streets. The Lincoln Highway entered Grand Mound from the east along Clinton Street and turned left at the bank onto Smith Street.</p><br>
<p>Grand Mound was established by the Chicago, Iowa and Nebraska Railroad in 1858 to provide transportation facilities and other services that were directed toward the region&#39;s agricultural economy. In the late 19th and early 20th century agricultural production increased and with it prosperity for the local community. The agricultural economy began to trend downward in the early 1920s when the bank was built. It went into receivership in 1926 and was sold to Union Savings Bank of Grand Mound the same year. In time it became one of several small banks owned by First Trust and Savings</p><br>
<p>Bank of Wheatland, Iowa.</p><br>
<h2>Architecture</h2><br>
<p>The Lytle Company was a building contracting company that had an architectural practice as part of its business. The actual architect of this building is unknown, however, the Lytle Company had designed several other banks across Iowa and into South Dakota. The building in Grand Mound combines both classical and modern elements in the structure. The modern appearance is attributed to a new attitude in banking known as "Progressive Banking." The banking industry in this era was thought of as predatory. Progressive Banking was seen as a good business that served the financial needs of the local community, and the architecture was meant to send this message. The bank building is also distinctive in Grand Mound as it is more massive and more decorative than other structures in town.</p><br>
<p>What is now First Trust and Savings Bank is a two-story, rectangular, brick structure that features off-white terra cotta moldings and details.</p><br>
<p>The corners have massive pier-forms for a building of this size that give the impression of a heavily fortified structure. The piers rise from a raised base that is covered with two colors of terra cotta lining, the upper section is off-white while the lower section is gray granite. The elevations of the building are capped with a broad parapet of brick. It features a pattern that is created by slightly recessed vertical bands that resemble a balustrade. There are also recessed designs on the corner piers. The parapet is outlined with terra cotta stringcourses. The</p><br>
<p>entrance portals and window bays are recessed and flanked by pilasters whose capitols feature a palmette design.</p><br>
<p>The interior features marble teller windows and a marble urn in the corner. The floor is covered with black and white tile. The second floor is not in use. A suspended ceiling now covers the public space in the open area of the first floor.</p><br>
<p>The Diapontia Islands or Diapontian Islands  are a Greek island complex in Ionian Sea. They are located in the northwest of Corfu, 6 km away from Corfu and about 40 km away from Italian coasts.The main islands of the archipelago are Othonoi, Ereikoussa and Mathraki. They are the only inhabited islands. The complex includes also the islets and rocks of Diakopo, Diaplo, Karavi, Kastrino, Leipso, Ostrako, Plaka, Plateia and Tracheia.</p><br>
<p>The largest island is Othonoi, with an area of 10.8 km and the most populated is Ereikoussa with a population of 496 inhabitants according to 2011 census. The islands are the most west point in Greece and administratively belong to Corfu regional unit and Corfu municipality. The islands today are a tranquil and serene place for holidays.</p><br>

<p>Dugan&#39;s Saloon is an historic building located in Grand Mound, Iowa, United States. The building has subsequently housed other businesses and is no longer a saloon. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2001.</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>William Dugan, who had this building constructed, was born in Ireland in 1868. He immigrated with his parents to the United States five years later. He married Ellen Hughes, whose family were also of Irish ancestry. This building was either his second or third saloon in Grand Mound. It is known he had built another two-story brick building in 1895. The second floor of that building housed a dance hall with a saloon on the first floor. Dance hall saloons were generally seen as places that lacked social integrity as they generally employed women of questionable virtue to entertain the men who patronized them. There is, however, no record of what kind of establishment Dugan&#39;s other saloon was. There may have been another business before that one as well.</p><br>
<p>The property on which Dugan built his saloon in 1905 had previously been the Kahler General Store. The store was destroyed in a fire, and he bought the property from the Kahler family in 1902. The second floor of the 1905 building has residential space that was occupied by Dugan, his wife and daughter. He continued to own the 1895 building and he rented it to grocer Herman Lucht. Grand Mound was mostly a German community with some Irish residents as well. After the American Civil War temperance organizations gained in popularity in Clinton County, including among the Germans. In 1908 there were 92 licensed saloons in Clinton County, with 66 located in the City of Clinton alone. while the Dugan family continued to live in the second floor apartment. Dugan&#39;s obituary credited him as a principal organizer of the new bank. Dugan sold all of his real estate holdings in Grand Mound to Julius Detlef, a local hardware merchant, in 1919. By that time he resided in Winnebago County, Illinois where he was a soft drink manufacturer in Rockford. The family left Rockford sometime around 1921. He died in October 1943 at a farm he owned near Davis Junction, Illinois. His daughter Theresa, who had married Frank Danielson, also resided in Davis Junction.</p><br>
<p>After Farmers and Merchants Bank relocated to its new building in 1923 the building was rented to William DeLange, who opened a pharmacy. He and his wife and son lived in the apartment above. After DeLange moved his business to another building in 1935, the building housed a variety of taverns with different owners. The names included The Old Timer, Heavilin&#39;s Tavern, and 6 By Tavern. The main floor was partitioned in 1954 and the post office moved into the front part of the building. Not long after that the American Mutual Insurance Association bought the building and occupied the space in the rear of the building. The post office moved out in 1965 and American Mutual took over the entire first floor. The upstairs apartment became a storage area.</p><br>
<h2>Architecture</h2><br>
<p>Dugans Saloon is a two-story, red brick structure that was built on a rough-cut stone foundation that sits about 2 ft above grade. It features a recessed entrance on the corner and a cut-corner on the second floor that reflect its location on a corner lot. The Smith Street elevation is segmented, especially on the second floor, when compared to the Clinton Street elevation. The round arch windows facing Smith Street on the second floor are in recessed areas that are framed by pilasters. The wide cornice across the top features brick corbel tables. At one time a parapet with a date block was located at the top of the cut-corner. It has been removed and the date block relocated to the logia and is flanked by two columns of the Tuscan order. The building is capped with a flat roof that gently slopes from the front to the rear of the structure. The entry area has changed over the years. It originally had large windows and that space was altered in the 1950s for the post office, and then at least once more after that. Dugans Saloon is somewhat unusual in Grand Mound&#39;s commercial district in that it "broke away from the Victorian vernacular to employ, however weakly, a recognizable architectural style."</p><br>
<p>Threecastles Castle is a National Monument situated in Blessington, County Wicklow, Ireland.</p><br>
<h2>Description</h2><br>
<p>Threecastles Castle is a rectangular three-storey tower house, with a stair turret projecting from the north east corner. Originally there was a structure attached to the west side of the tower, as the remnants of a barrel vault are visible. Another vaulted roof is evident on the upper floor. On the first floor has a fireplace and a gardrobe. The walls are four to five feet thick, and are faced with cut granite. The castle sits on an east facing slope overlooking a ford on the River Liffey.</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>The history of the castle is unclear, but it is believed that due to the castles name there were more than one castle in the townsland. Of the other two castles, the site of one is known from a 19th-century Ordnance Survey, the third castles site is unknown. It was probably built by Lord Deputy Gerald Fitzgerald, 8th earl of Kildare, in the 16th century. It was the site of a number of battles in the 1500s. Though some speculate that the three refers to the castle having three parts.</p><br>
<p>The John and Margaret Bell House is located in Spring Prairie, Wisconsin. The two-story stone house, built of local sandstone sits on a 3.8 acre parcel. It was originally part of an 80-acre parcel and with other parcels was part of a farm. The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1994.</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>John Bell, in partnership with E. D. Lay, started a nursery business in Wisconsin in 1832, selling a variety of plants and trees. He acquired the property on which the Bell house sits in 1852, and either moved into an existing house on the property, or, according to local lore, built a new house. Bell was also a local politician and a member of the Wisconsin Assembly in 1853. By 1858, however, he was out of the nursery business, possibly due to a pest called "bark louse". Thereafter, he was a farmer. Bell died in 1884 at 77 years of age. His wive lived until 1902, his heirs then sold the farm to a sister, who held it until 1914 when it passed from the family.</p><br>
<p>The house is significant as an example of a vernacular stone house built from locally quarried sandstone. The quarry was originally opened by the Strangite Mormons, who had settled in the Burlington area in the 1840s. The house is larger than other stone houses in the area, at 62 feet by 30 feet. It is built of two layers of the unusually thin sandstone blocks sold by the Mormon quarry.</p><br>
<p>Mount Gilead African Methodist Episcopal Church is a historic black church located atop Buckingham Mountain, near Holicong, Buckingham Township, Bucks County, Pennsylvania.</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>The congregation was founded in 1822 by fifteen free and escaped enslaved Africans, and it is thought to be the second-oldest A.M.E. congregation in Bucks County. The first church building was a log chapel, built in 1834. Title to the church property was in the name of the minister, Daniel Yeomans, when he deeded it to the congregation in 1843. The present stone church was built in 1852. The sloped site allowed for a single-room, 20-by-30-foot sanctuary above and a Sunday school room below.</p><br>
<p>Tradition holds that the community was a station on the Underground Railroad, the last station before fugitive slaves crossed the Delaware River into New Jersey. The surrounding landowners were white Quaker abolitionists, who tolerated the escaped slaves building cabins on Buckingham Mountain. Selling or giving the land to the squatters would have been a direct violation of the Fugitive Slave Act of 1793, which made it a federal crime to assist an escaped slave. The mountains isolation and lookout views in all directions seemed to provide residents with some degree of protection from slave-catchers. At the community&#39;s height, reportedly a hundred African Americans lived on the mountain.</p><br>
<p>Fugitive slave Benjamin "Big Ben" Jones (ca. 1800&ndash;1875) was a massive man &ndash; reportedly 6-feet 10 1/2-inches tall &ndash; who escaped from Maryland and settled on Buckingham Mountain around 1833. In March 1844, his master and four slave-catchers appeared and captured Jones following a bloody struggle. They transported him to Philadelphia, and placed him on a ship to Baltimore, Maryland, where he was held in the notorious Hope Slatter slave prison, awaiting transfer to New Orleans for sale. A group of Buckingham and Philadelphia Quakers raised the $700 (equal to $ today) to buy him out of slavery. He returned to the mountain, where he married a woman named Sarah Johnson. He lived the last decade of his life at the Bucks County Almshouse, dying there in 1875. He is buried in the church&#39;s graveyard.</p><br>
<p>The graveyard contains 243 marked graves and an unknown number of unmarked ones. Among the burials are a number of the church&#39;s ministers, Civil War veterans of the United States Colored Troops, and William E. Teat (1914&ndash;2001), a baseball player from the Negro Leagues.</p><br>
<p>Regular services were held at the church into the early 20th century. The property is maintained by descendants of the congregation. The church building is currently used for weddings, funerals, and special services.</p><br>
<p>The North Star, an independent film loosely based on "Big Ben" Joness life, debuted in 2015. A circa-1870 photograph of Jones, the only known image of him, appears on the films poster. Some of the scenes were filmed at the church.</p><br>
<p>Faribault City Hall is the seat of local government for Faribault, Minnesota, United States, in continual service since its completion in 1897. Originally housing a public library as well, Faribault City Hall was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982 for having local significance in the themes of architecture and politics/government. It was nominated for its associations with Faribault&#39;s emergence as a regionally important city in the 1890s and a concurrent wave of civic development statewide, and for its Renaissance Revival architecture.</p><br>
<h2>History and significance</h2><br>
<p>Faribault City Hall was designed by architect Harry Wild Jones of Minneapolis in 1894, invoking the Renaissance Revival style then popular for public buildings. The project was a result of increased civic development during the 1890s in Faribault and many other communities throughout Minnesota, when numerous government buildings, libraries, water works, and park systems were established. Locally the same decade was when Faribault first achieved its status as an important manufacturing center in south central Minnesota.</p><br>
<p>Faribault&#39;s public library originally occupied the south half of the building, but moved to the Thomas Scott Buckham Memorial Library in the 1930s.</p><br>
<p>The Charles Franks House is a historic house located at 34431 USA Route 52 east of Lanark, Illinois. The house was built circa 1950 by Charles Franks, a prominent settler and local landowner. The site of the house had previously been home to Isaac Chambers tavern and stagecoach stop on the Galena Road; the tavern also became a shelter for troops and a target for warring Native Americans in the Black Hawk War. The houses design is a vernacular implementation of the Federal style, which was prevalent in the United States earlier in the 19th century but had faded from popularity by 1850. While the house features the style&#39;s typical hipped roof and jack arch lintels above the windows, it is smaller than most Federal houses and is missing characteristic decorations such as a fanlight above the front door.</p><br>
<p>The house was added to the National Register of Historic Places on May 20, 1998.</p><br>
<p>Sierra Madre Pioneer Cemetery, is a cemetery in the Sierra Madre, California. In 1881, Nathaniel Coburn Carter purchased land located along Central Ave., later renamed Sierra Madre Boulevard, for use as a Cemetery for the new city.</p><br>
<p>Located on a 2.5-acre (10,117 m²) site on Sierra Madre Blvd and Coburn, It is the areas oldest cemetery. A Civil War veteran, John Richardson, who had recently moved to Sierra Madre became the first person interred in the Cemetery on July 3, 1882. Of the first seventeen families that lived in Sierra Madre, when it was founded in 1881, twelve of them are buried in the cemetery. Sierra Madre Pioneer Cemetery is a historic landmark #42 in Sierra Madre. There are forty-eight properties listed on Sierra Madres Designated Historical Properties List.</p><br>
<p>Each Memorial Day since 1924 Sierra Madre VFW Post 3208 with Boy Scouts of America Troop 373 of Sierra Madre places flags and crosses at the graves of military veterans. Veterans of the American Civil War, both Union and Confederate, Spanish–American War, World War I and World War II and the Korean War are buried at Sierra Madre Pioneer Cemetery.</p><br>
<p>After WW 1, Sierra Madre held Parades on Memorial Day, Veterans Day and 4th of July Independence Day. Veterans, Scouts and City officials would march from Sierra Madre Memorial Park to Sierra Madre Pioneer Cemetery. While the Memorial Day and Veterans Day Parades have ended. The Independence Day Parade continues each year. A Memorial Day service is held in Sierra Madre Pioneer Cemetery at 11am each year, hosted by the VFW.</p><br>
<p>In February 1881, Nathaniel Carter purchased the original 1103 acres that comprised the new city of Sierra Madre. The land was acquired in three purchases: 845 acres of Rancho Santa Anita from Lucky Baldwin, 108 acres from the Southern Pacific Railroad Company and 150 acres from John Richardson (1811-Aug. 9, 1884).</p><br>
<p>Carter transferred 20 feet by 20 feet family sized cemetery plots to city citizens in the early years. He died in 1904 and his widow, Anneta M. Carter, continued to sell family plots by request.</p><br>
<p>The cemetery is well cared for now, the only new spaces available are in the new Memorial Garden which is an area for cremains. The cemetery fell into neglect for a short time with upkeep only from volunteers, family members of those interred, local members of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion. The Sierra Madre Cemetery Association was organized in 1961 and has maintained the cemetery since then.</p><br>
<p>Sierra Madre Pioneer Cemetery is next to Sierra Madre Community Park, Dapper Baseball Field, the City Yard and the city water ponds.</p><br>

<p>Oylat Cave  is a show cave in Bursa Province, northwestern Turkey.</p><br>
<h2>Location and access</h2><br>
<p>The cave is located 1 km south of Hilmiye village and 17 km southeast of İnegöl town in Bursa Province. It is accessible from İnegöl on the state road to Ankara E90 southwards, then taking İnegöl-Tavşanlı route until Gündüzlü village exit, thenafter changing to the provincial road at the junction marked "Oylat Thermal Spring Resort" and passing through Hilmiye village.</p><br>
<h2>Characteristics</h2><br>
<p>Oylat Cave was formed on a significant, east-west oriented fault line in the marble formation dating back to around 3 Ma. It is situated at the end of the Oylat Creek Canyon in a terrain of the Pliocene period. Fossils have been found in the cave.</p><br>
<p>The caves main entrance is 5 - above the canyon floor, where at this place the canyon walls rise up 450 - high. There exist three more entrances high above the caves main entrance. The cave has two interconnected levels, and has a meandering shape.</p><br>
<p>Discovered in 2004, the cave has an overall length of 730 m with a 93 m clearance. The stalactites and stalagmites in the cave are colorful. It has a rich natural ecosystem, and is inhabitad by bats, butterflies, worms and guanobites.</p><br>
<p>A large chamber is reached following a narrow gallery of 2 - width and around 15 m height after entry to the first floor cave. The chamber is occupied by dripstone ponds and gravel yards. The cave above is 25 - wide and 3 - high. It is composed of large blocks, pillars, stalactites and stalagmites as well as gravel, sand and clay layers.</p><br>
<p>The meteorological conditions inside the cave vary according to the location. Narrow galleries and gateways connecting chambers and floors are somewhat windy. At an outside temperature of 29 &deg;C and a humidity of 47%, the temperature falls to 19 &deg;C and the humidity rises to 55% in the cave entrance. In the narrow gallery, the temperature decreases to 17 &deg;C while the humidity goes up to 78%. Finally in the chamber, the temperature is at its lowest value of 14 &deg;C and the humidity reaches 90%.</p><br>
<h2>Tourism</h2><br>
<p>Located in a spa resort, the cave was opened to tourism in 2006. It is believed that the cave is capable of curing respiratory complaints, such as asthma and bronchitis. The cave is visited by domestic and foreign tourists. While domestic tourists come all around the year, foreign tourists, mostly from Kuwait and the United Arab Emirates, visit the cave during the summer season, between June and October.</p><br>
<p>Only 650 m of the cave is open to the public. Visiting the cave takes about 90 minutes.</p><br>
<p>The Steward–Emery House is a historic house in North Anson, Maine. It is a handsome Italianate house, built c. 1870 with Colonial Revival alterations early in the 20th century. The house is most notable for the large amount of high-quality trompe-l&#39;œil artwork on its walls, which is among the finest known domestic examples in the state. The property was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1992.</p><br>
<h2>Description and history</h2><br>
<p>The Steward–Emery House is located on the west side of North Main Street (Maine State Routes 8 and 16), just north of Madison Street and south of the Carraboc Community School, on the northern fringe of North Anson village. it consists of a roughly square main block, connected via ells of decreasing size to a large carriage barn; the entire complex forms an L shape. The main house has a truncated hip roof topped by a low balustrade at the center. The walls are finished in clapboards, with quoined corners. The front facade, facing east, is three bays wide, with a central entrance sheltered by an ornate portico with chamfered posts and elliptical arches. Above the entrance are paired round-arch windows; the remaining bays have sash windows. The south facade of the main block has an enclosed Colonial Revival porch extending across most of hits length.</p><br>
<p>The building interior follows a central-hall plan, with high-quality woodwork and marble fireplace surrounds on the first floor. The hall, from the ground floor to the attic, has been painted with an extensive and extremely well-preserved trompe-l&#39;œil fresco that includes elements painted to resemble woodwork paneling, elaborate cartouches, and a richly detailed cornice. Some of the downstairs chambers have also retained portions of this fresco work. The frescoes are believed to be the work of a Danish artist named Wallentine L. Keiler (b. 1840) whose name is painted on an attic post. The paintings rival in sophistication, and exceed in quality of preservation, all other documented examples of this type of work in the state, including several notable examples in Portland.</p><br>
<p>The house was built about 1870 for Marcellus Steward, a businessman about whom is little known. He purchased what is believed to be this property in 1866 (deed research is unclear), and is presumed to have built the house soon afterward. The Colonial Revival additions, included the porch on the south side and enlarged windows on the front, were made by his daughter&#39;s family.</p><br>
<p>The Thomas Goodall House is a historic house at 232 Main Street in Sanford, Maine. It was built in 1871 for Thomas Goodall, owner of the local Goodall Mill, one of the regions largest employers in the late 19th century. Retaining many Second Empire details from its original construction, it underwent significant Colonial Revival alterations by Goodalls son, Eugene, early in the 20th century. The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1975.</p><br>
<h2>Description and history</h2><br>
<p>The Goodall House is located on the east side of Main Street (Maine State Route 109) just south of Sanford center, and just north of the Louis B. Goodall Memorial Library. The main block is roughly square in shape, two stories in height, with a mansard roof topped by a square cupola. A single-story porch wraps around three sides of the house, extending to the right to include a porte-cochere. The porch is supported by grouped round columns, with elaborate balustrades below and above. A glassed-in porch stands at the second level above the entrance. The dormers in the mansard roof are topped by segmented arches, having been stripped of their original Second Empire woodwork.</p><br>
<p>The house was built in 1871 by Thomas Goodall, an Englishman who made his fortune in American textile business, and was then owner of the Goodall Mill in Sanford. At the time of this houses construction, the mill was a relatively small operation, but by the turn of the 20th century it was the areas largest employer, with a payroll of about 1,000. The house originally had more elaborate Second Empire styling, including projecting window bays and an entry portico; these were removed by Goodalls son Eugene, the houses next owner, who replace many of those features with the existing Colonial Revival treatment.</p><br>
<p>Batchelders Block is the second-oldest surviving commercial building in Faribault, Minnesota, United States; constructed in 1868. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1990 for having local significance in the themes of architecture and commerce. It was nominated for its associations with Faribaults early commercial development and the citys emergence as a regional commercial center, and for being a well-preserved example of Faribaults early commercial architecture.</p><br>
<h2>Description</h2><br>
<p>Batchelders Block is a narrow, three-story building 28 ft wide and 80 ft long. It was constructed with locally quarried limestone in a particularly fine Italianate design by local architect Charles N. Daniels. The only older commercial building still standing in Faribault is the 1865 Heinrick Building, though that structure has been architecturally modified while Batchelders Block retains "a very high degree" of historical integrity. Batchelder&#39;s Block was the first three-story building in Faribault, and the first to include a pulley-operated elevator.</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>Entrepreneur George F. Batchelder commissioned the building in 1868. He operated a dry goods shop on the first floor and a carpet shop on the second. The third floor was contained office space, and was leased for many years by the Congress of Industrial Organizations, the first labor union active in Faribault.</p><br>
<p>Tamanowas Rock (also spelled Tamanous</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>Tamanowas Rock is said to have first been used 10,000 years ago by the Chimakum (or Chemacum) people (who no longer exist), leading to its alternate name "Chimacum Rock", whose name is also found in other local geographic features. In accordance with legend, it may have been used as a refuge from the tsunami caused by the 1700 Cascadia earthquake, and earlier as a lookout for hunting now-extinct mastodon. "Tamanowas" means "spirit power" in the Klallam language.</p><br>
<h2>Preservation</h2><br>
<p>The site is either a registered archaeological site, or nominated to become one with the Washington State Department of Archaeology.</p><br>
<p>In 2013, the rock was purchased with 62 acres of surrounding land by the Jamestown SKlallam Tribe for preservation, at the end of a series of loans and purchases by organizations including Washington State Parks, Bullitt Foundation and Jefferson Land Trust, that started in 2009. The land was added to an existing 22-acre purchase by the tribe. Prior to this, it was a rock climbing site, a practice which was ended when the SKlallam Tribe took ownership.</p><br>
<h3>Desecration</h3><br>
<p>In 2014, the rock was desecrated with graffiti, gaining national and international attention.</p><br>
<h2>Geology</h2><br>
<p>The mineral composition is Eocene subaerial adakitic lava and lava breccia. Dikes of similar composition exist in the Blue Hills near Bremerton 60 km away, both thought to be created by subduction of the Kula-Farallon Ridge beneath North America. They may be related by being part of a magmatic arc, they may be two isolated volcanic centers, or they may have been created at a single center and displaced along a fault (see Puget Sound faults).</p><br>
<p>The Hospital de los Venerables  of Seville, Spain, is a baroque 17th-century building which served as a residence for priests. It currently houses the Velázquez Center, dedicated to the famous painter Diego Velázquez. It is located in the Plaza de los Venerables, in the center of the Barrio de Santa Cruz and close to the, the Seville Cathedral and Alcázar.</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>In 1627, the Brotherhood of Silence (Sevilla) decided to provide for elderly, poor and disabled priests. They rented a house where the priests were given shelter and assistance. In 1673, the brotherhood decided to build a new shelter for the same purpose; this was the Hospital de los Venerables.</p><br>
<p>The hospital was founded by Canon in 1675, to be the residence of the venerable priests. Construction began that year, under the direction of the architect Juan Domínguez. In 1687, the project was taken over by the architect Leonardo de Figueroa who completed the building in 1697. The church was built in 1689, and is dedicated to San Fernando. The hospital was funded by the brotherhood, charity and the monarchy until 1805 when the it could no longer be adequately supported.</p><br>
<p>In 1840, the hospital became a textile factory and the former residents were moved to the Charity Hospital. Complaints from the brotherhood led to a Royal Order in 1848, which returned their property and allowed the priests to return to their old home. The Plaza de the Venerables has been named after the priests since 1868.</p><br>
<h2>Residential building</h2><br>
<p>The building is in the Baroque style with two floors. The hospital ceased to be a residence in the 1970s.</p><br>
<h3>Cloister</h3><br>
<p>The hospital has a Seville courtyard with a stepped central fountain with circular steps that are decorated with tiles. Around the courtyard are galleries with Tuscan arches on marble columns with ática bases. The fountain was designed by and built by Francisco Rodriguez, the tiles on the fountain were made by Melchor Moreno.</p><br>
<p>The east side of the courtyard was the infirmary. It is a rectangular hall with central arches, the arches are decorated with symbols that relate to the invocation of the Hospital of San Pedro. The stairway is covered by an elliptical vault that is decorated with Baroque plasterwork.</p><br>
<p>Upstairs there is another living area, identical to the one on the ground floor, which connects to the church choir. The library is also on the upper floor. In the southeast corner is the top lookout tower which is decorated in Mudejar style. The building facade is white lime contrasting with red brick pilasters, architraves and cornices.</p><br>
<h2>Church</h2><br>
<p>The church has a single nave covered by a barrel vault with lunettes and arches. The nave is decorated with mural frescos by Valdes Leal: frescos in the chancel represent the invention of the Holy Cross; on the right side of the presbytery is represented San Fernando delivering the mosque to the Archbishop; on the left side is shown San Fernando before the Virgin of Antigua. The reliquary urns are copper and Flemish in origin. Marble paintings of the Immaculate Virgin and Child were made by Sassoferrato. The paintings that cover the vault and the walls were made by Lucas de Valdés, son of Leal.</p><br>
<p>The main altarpiece, dating from 1889, depicts the Apotheosis of San Fernando, also by Lucas de Valdés. On either side are represented San Clemente and San Isidoro, painted by The relief figures of John the Baptist and San Juan Evangelista are attributed to and date from the first half of the seventeenth century. The central panel of the altarpiece, which depicts St. Jerome, was originally attributed to Herrera the Elder (16th century), but later was found to date from the mid-seventeenth century. Sculptures of San Fernando and San Pedro, located under the choir, were created by Pedro Roldan.</p><br>
<p>In the altarpiece of the Conception, the figure of San Esteban is an anonymous work of the seventeenth century, but it is attributed to Montanes. The altars are the work of. The pulpit, made with polychrome marble and rich woods is the work of Francisco de Barahona. Bartolomé Esteban Murillo, who was a friend of Justino de Neve, also painted a work for the hospital, one of his most famous works, today set out in the Prado of Madrid.</p><br>
<h2>Restoration</h2><br>
<p>Since 1991, the hospital has been the home of the (Fondo de Cultura of Seville). The foundation restored the building between 1987 and 1991, a process that required the authorization of Cardinal Carlos Amigo Vallejo. The building was inaugurated by Queen Sofia on November 5, 1991, with an exhibition dedicated to Sevillian painting of the Golden Age.</p><br>
<h2>Velázquez Centre</h2><br>
<p>The Velázquez Centre is an exhibition center that began in July 2007 with the acquisition, by the Focus Foundation, of a painting of Santa Rufina that is attributed to Diego Velázquez and valued at 12.4 million euros. Some of the hospital rooms have been renovated to exhibit the Santa Rufina and others in the permanent collection. There are about a dozen works of art including the by Velazquez and the Portrait of Martinez Montanes (1616) by Francisco Varela, both owned by the City of Seville. The Focus-Abengoa Foundation has provided another canvas attributed to Velázquez, an Immaculate Conception from the early seventeenth century. Other artists represented are Francisco Pacheco, Murillo and Bartolomeo Cavarozzi.</p><br>
<p>The Inquirer Building, formerly called the Elverson Building, is an eighteen-story building at N. Broad and Callowhill Streets in the Callowhill neighborhood of Philadelphia, completed in 1924 as the new home for the newspaper The Philadelphia Inquirer, which was joined by the Philadelphia Daily News in 1957.</p><br>
<h2>History and description</h2><br>
<p>Construction began on the building in July 1923. Its gold dome, and the four-faced clock under it, could be seen for many miles. The building is 340 ft tall.</p><br>
<p>The first issue of the Inquirer printed at the building came out on July 13, 1925. The newspaper operation was considered at the time to have the most modern printing plant in the world, with the largest composing room and fastest printing presses. The building also featured an auditorium and an assembly hall, and had its own refrigeration and water filtration plant.</p><br>
<p>The interior features a globe chandelier in the lobby, and a catwalk over the former press room. Elverson and his wife made their home on the building&#39;s 12th and 13th floors.</p><br>
<p>In 1996 the building was added to the National Register of Historic Places.</p><br>
<p>An extension to the building at 440 N. Broad Street, called the Rotogravure Building and designed by Albert Kahn Associates, was built in 1948 by Walter Annenberg, who was the owner of the newspapers at the time. It was sold in 2005 by Knight-Ridder. In 2011 the extension was the headquarters of the Philadelphia School District.</p><br>
<p>In late July 2011, it was announced that Philadelphia Media Net, which owned the newspapers and the building, was selling the 526,000 ft&sup2; building to a developer for a price believed to be more than $19 million. The relocation to the building&#39;s third floor was completed by July 2012.</p><br>
<p>The developer who bought the Inquirer Building, Bart Blatstein, announced in May 2015 that he would attempt to turn the building into a 125-room boutique hotel. He applied for $5 million in funding from Pennsylvania to go towards the $36.4 million project. According to Blatstein&#39;s schedule, construction would begin in August 2016. Blatstein had originally planned on using the building as part of a hotel/casino complex, but failed to receive the necessary licensing from the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board. Blarstein has said that he wants to preserve the building and its historical features, although his previous casino plan, "The Provence", called for new construction in a "faux-French theme", which drew criticism as being "tacky".</p><br>
<p>The Joseph Steffens House is a historic house located in eastern Carroll County, Illinois, east of Milledgeville. Settler Joseph Steffens built the rammed earth house in 1843; it is the only surviving rammed earth house in the state. Rammed earth construction uses soil to build walls by pressurizing it in molds; the method was common in continental Europe and saw some use in 18th-century eastern America and in the Great Plains and Southwest during the Great Depression, though it was rare in Illinois. While Steffens claimed that he borrowed the construction method from his former house in Canada, he was also likely influenced by American authors who promoted the method and a local timber shortage.</p><br>
<p>The house was added to the National Register of Historic Places on April 10, 1985.</p><br>
<p>The Sargent-Roberts House is a historic house at 178 State Street in Bangor, Maine. Built in 1814 and restyled several times, the house exemplifies a local trend to update high-quality houses to the latest styles in 19th-century Bangor. The house&#39;s exterior is a Second Empire alteration of a Federal period structure, with an interior exhibiting Federal and Greek Revival features. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1996.</p><br>
<h2>Description and history</h2><br>
<p>The Sargent-Roberts House is located on the north side of State Street (United States Route 2), a short way east of Bangors downtown business district, between Grove Street and Forest Avenue. It is a 2-1/2 story wood frame structure, five bays wide, with a flared mansard roof and matchboard siding. The roof has a wide eave supported by decorative brackets, and has a central bell-shaped gable flanked by segmented-arch dormers. The centered entrance is sheltered by an elaborately decorated portico supported by pillars and pilasters joined by arches. To each side of the main block are single-story flanking elements, and there is a two-story addition extending the house to the rear, where modern fire escape stairs mar the buildings appearance. The interior has retained significant Federal and Greek Revival woodwork and fireplace surrounds, despite its conversion to apartments.</p><br>
<p>The house was known to be under construction in 1814, when Bangor was occupied by British troops during the War of 1812. It was built by Edward Sargent, a local builder who sold the house in the 1830s to focus on farming. The buyer, Amos Roberts, was involved in the locally important lumber business, and probably added the Greek Revival elements soon after purchasing it. Roberts was also responsible for the major restyling that took place in 1866, giving the house its Second Empire features. Based on stylistic analysis, it is likely that the noted local architect Benjamin S. Deane was involved in the design of these alterations, as they closely resemble other work in Bangor known to be his.</p><br>
<p>The Pierre de Laitre, or Pierre de lAître is a stone at 624 m above sea level that forms the summit of a wooded sandstone mountain of the same name in the Kemberg massif to the north of the town of Taintrux, in the canton of Saint-Dié, department of Vosges. The mountain overlooks the old cemetery, or laître of Taintrux, from which the stone and the mountain take their name.</p><br>
<h2>Description</h2><br>
<p>Pierre de Laitre, the highest point, gives its name to a small sandstone mount in the Vosges mountains, a Triassic sandstone butte in the eroded part of the Kemberg massif dominating the Taintroué valley. The summit is a large sandstone rock that has been separated from the underlying sandstone layers by time and weather.</p><br>
<p>Most of the small wooded mount, which includes the Forest of Chaumont rising separately to 620 m above sea level, was once grass-covered and exposed to the wind.</p><br>
<p>The inhabitants of Taintrux use the mountain for walking. It is near the town of Saint-Dié-des-Vosges and close to the Sentier des Ducs (GR355).</p><br>
<p>The Pierre de Laitre, at 624 m above sea level, is easily accessible after a climb of 150 m from the Grandrupt forest road in the Kemberg massif.</p><br>
<p>There is a gazebo on top of the stone with a protective barrier from which there is a good view over the valley and the village of Taintrux.</p><br>
<p>The Grant Family House is a historic house at 72 Grant Street in Saco, Maine. Built in 1825, the house is a fine local example of Federal period architecture, but is most notable for an extensive series of well-preserved stenciled artwork on the walls of its hall and main parlor. <h2>Description and history</h2><br>
<p>The Grant House is located on the north side of Grant Street in the rural northern part of Saco. The main block, built about 1800, is a 2-1/2 story wood frame structure, five bays wide, with a side gable roof, central chimney, and clapboard siding. A small two-story ell extends to the left, joining the main house to a small barn with two garage bays, from which another structure projects to the rear. The main entrance is centered, and sheltered by a bracketed hood with a hip roof (a later Italianate alteration).</p><br>
<p>The interior of the main block follows a typical central-chimney plan, with a narrow entry vestibule, from which a narrow staircase winds upward, chambers flanking the chimney to either side, and the kitchen and a small bedroom in the rear, along with a second staircase and a passage to the ell. The interior has retained most of its original Federal period woodwork. The most significant feature of the interior is the extensive stencilwork applied to the walls of the front entry hall and the right-side parlor. The hall has panels of pineapples separated by oak leaf clusters, with bands of oak leaf foliage. The parlor has similar banding at the top and bottom, with stencil patterns of sunflowers and vines with poppies. Above the fireplace are two examples of peacocks with four baskets. The artwork is in a style popularized by the itinerant New Hampshire-based stencil artist Moses Eaton, and the examples in this house were first documented in 1937.</p><br>
